The big win the absent captain asked of his team was delivered in style to set up a chance of winning the league. A strong start was again delivered by Steve & Mark and team Roger who won 3&2 and 3&1 respectively then another 3 points was delivered by new pairing of Danny & John who won 2&1. Dave & Bob halved after being 2 up at one stage but Chris & Bob D went down 2&1 despite Chris being back to excellent form! A good 12.5 haul puts us level with Wheathill on 65.5, six points off the leaders Long Sutton who just have us to play and T&P who have finished. Wheathill then go to Minehead to complete the League fixtures.

A winning draw against T&P who have never failed to finish in the top two set ourselves up as title contenders with two away games remaining. The front pair Steve & Mark are proving to be strong openers and they notched up their now customary win followed up soon after by team Roger who are grounding out important results. Dave & John slipped to a second successive defeat ,where putting was an issue, then Danny & Nick, after leading throughout, never quite finished their opponents off despite several opportunities and paid for this when the T&P captain (eventually) holed for birdie on the 18th to halve the match. With team Bob coming up against an 11 handicapper, who even the home team captain described as a 'bandit', and who parred pretty much all the way round, also losing, the match finished 2 1/2 each giving CST the points advantage as the away team.

The Saints made it three wins in a row claiming the scalp of previously undefeated Wheathill with a determined team performance. The opening match could have gone either way but team Roger battled valiantly for their half, with Roger Hinds narrowly missing his putt on the 18th that would have secured a win. Steve Southgate and Mark Cording are gelling well and they notched up their second win defeating a strong pairing. With Chris Gingell injured Bob Dennett was brought in to the line-up and he played well and brought the best out of his partner Bob Barrow who notched up his second win. Danny Dowell and Nick Clarke remain unbeaten in four outings winning their third successive match, although as usual made it a lot harder for themselves than it should have been! The only real disappointment was the anchor pairing of Dave Mugridge and John Wandless losing after winning their previous four. In essence though this was a fine victory and with three away matches to finish the season, and with a couple strange results elsewhere recently, we could still turn our current bottom place into at least third!

Steve and Mark got the Saints off to a good start with a 2&1 win but second out Chris and Bob again found the in-form 'away' pairing and slipped to a 3&2 defeat. This however was the only low point as team Roger notched up their second successive 4&3 win followed by Danny & Nick 4&2 and Dave & John 4&3. Although a bit breezy in places the sun shone which was a pleasant change from the recent rain. The visitors were very complimentary about the course and the catering. We were well looked after again by Isla and Penny, while Dave and the boys have the course in fantastic condition. Many are saying we currently have the best greens in the County! Look forward to our next home game on 23rd July against in-form Wheathill.

Dave & John led from the front with a convincing 6&5 win with team Roger (4&3) and Danny & Nick (3&2) also victorious. Steve Southgate and Mark Cording went up the 18th all-square and battled out a good half while the putts didn't drop for Chris Gingell and Bob Barrow. Good performances though all-round and we will be looking for another home win next Thursday when we seek revenge against Minehead.

Report

Not much to say except great company & hospitality! Wheathill is Wheathill and our opponents played it better than we did. The only half we got were Terry Rutherford and Mark Cording who had got their noses in front. Other than that we put in some good fightbacks but proved not good enough on the day.

Report

Dave Mugridge and John Wandless went out first against 9-man Cannington and soon found themselves two down after four. Dave though then came into his own birdieing three and parring five of the next nine holes to go four up before John parred the 14th to close out a good 5&4 win.

Team Roger were second out and they had a tough tussle being brought back from two up at one stage. It all came down to the 18th however and Roger Hinds holed the putt that settled an honourable half.

Frank Martin and Mark Cording were the unfortunate ones who came up against an in-form Dick Turpin who played much better than his 20 handicap would suggest. (He must like playing against CST as he did pretty much the same at Cannington when John Mac and I played against him in a friendly....he was off 20 then.....strange that!!). Anyway...I digress...

So Danny and myself went one down on the second but levelled it up straight away with Danny parring the next two and went one up on the fifth with both of us close enough for birdies. Danny parred 9 & 10 to take us three up before we lost 11 to a birdie. I parred 12 to restore the 3 shot lead then after two halves, with Danny getting an excellent up & down for par on 14, we closed it out on 15 for a 4&3.

The last group of Rod & Bob had the 'luxury' of playing the one man and duly won 5&4 with Rod securing the win with a par on 14.

We look forward to Wheathill away next Tuesday with a reshuffled pack!

Nick

Report

On a bright and breezy day we entertained our rivals from last season, Long Sutton, who were in buoyant mood following their big win at Minehead.

Danny & Nick resumed their partnership from last season but soon found themselves three down after seven holes with their opponents not putting a foot wrong. Some hope was restored when Danny parred the 8th to get one back and with Nick (unusually) hitting the green on the 9th then (more unusually) sinking the putt it was back to one. Sutton went back to two up with a birdie on 11 beating our two pars and that's how it stayed until 14 when Danny parred to get it back to one down. Nick reverted to type and missed a 2 foot putt that would have won 15 before the (up to then) reliable Long Sutton putting let them down allowing us to halve the 16th and win the 17th with a par sending us down the 18th all square. Decent putts from both sides for pars saw the hole halved as well as the match.

Dave Mugridge and John Wandless gelled well to firmly control their match holding a two shot lead through most of it and comfortably winning 3&2 for what proved to be the only CST win of the day. The match was tight for the first five holes but they won 6&7 to go two up. Sutton won 10 with a shot to bring it back to one but John birdied 11 & 14 to go 3 up. A par from Dave on the 16th was enough to see the game out.

The 'bombers' Rod Stevens and Mark Cording never really got a firm foothold in their match and although the pairs of Frank Martin & Roger Davis, and Roger Hinds and Mike Hone, staged good fight-backs, the putts didn't drop for them and Sutton emerged comfortable winners in the end.

It was, though, an enjoyable match with some old friendships renewed. We were well looked after by Penny, Isla and Andy, who produced his customary excellence, and golf was momentarily forgotten. We do though hope to get our first win when we entertain Cannington in our next match on May 30th.

Report

With the weather fine with a gentle breeze and the course set up in fine condition, hopes were high of a positive start to the season although caution had to be exercised following the hosts previous 4-1 win against T&P.

Due to a couple regulars either having left the club, injured or otherwise unavailable, the pack had to be shuffled somewhat so we kicked off with a new pairing of Danny with Mark. Sadly, as seems to have been the case on a few occasions, Danny came up against someone who on the day 'plays much better than his handicap suggests!'. Suffice to say that a 17 handicapper who consistently out-drives both Danny & Mark, and with a short game to match, is probably a good friend of the Minehead handicap secretary. Although they battled hard, they eventually went down 3&2.

In another new pairing Dave Mugridge was put with the 3/4 swing captain and we gelled fairly well winning 3&2 reasonably comfortably. Some decent pars from myself and a couple timely birdies from Dave (who probably won't ever again say to anyone "don't leave it short" when they are standing over an 18" putt!! ) 😀, saw us through.

In the closest match team Roger (Hinds & Davis) played consistently but went 1 down on the 14th and couldn't quite get it back, with RH's putt for the hole on 18 that would have halved the match, going agonisingly close.

Team John (Wandless and Twose) lost 3&2, with JW favouring the right side of the course, and final pairing of Rod Stevens and Mike Hone going down 6&5 with both pairs falling victim to some more questionable handicaps.

So, not the start we were looking for but better days will come and we look forward to the visit of Long Sutton to CST on May 7th.
