Away Day

Cumberwell Park Away Day March 28th 2019

In unseasonably warm sunshine, 17 of the Avalon Seniors squad took to the lush fairways of Cumberwell Park in Wiltshire for a pre-season get together.

Five groups of three and a two bringing up the rear we set off behind 'pace setters' Rod Stevens, Mike Hone and the eventual winner, Alan Chance for a casual stroll around the beautiful parkland course.

The greens on the front nine (Yellow course) were unfortunately slow and bumpy having recently, like our own, been hollow-tined, so most struggled to get the ball to the hole. Rod though must have found them to his liking, despite his protestations, recording the best front-nine score by a good distance of 19 points.

As well as Rod only three others had a better front-nine score than back, and these all finished with 33 points to contest the top place. With all three, Dave Muggridge, John Twose and Alan Chance scoring 16 points on the back nine, the help of 'scrutineer' Bob was sought to do the computations. Despite an excellent birdie on the par 5 last, Dave managed to blob two of the last six to come in with 10 points. John double-bogied the last for 11 points while a par for three points saw Alan take the spoils.

I somehow managed to get the only two on the 15th hole we played (which was hole number 24!) while nearest the pin winner was Ian Griffiths on the 7th (hole 16) and longest drive went to Dave Muggridge on the 11th (hole 20).

Everyone seemed to enjoy the day and we look forward to the new Avalon season with the first match soon approaching at Minehead on April 11th.

Thanks to everyone for supporting the day.

Nick
